Flash Lite - Traffic Lite

Traffic Lite

Traffic Lite is a prototype project for backstage.bbc.co.uk. It’s a Flash Lite client for reading UK road travel news provided by the BBC backstage travel RSS feeds. The idea behind the project is pretty simple. Having access to the latest BBC travel information whilst you’re travelling.

Traffic Lite - Flash Lite Traffic Lite - Flash Lite Traffic Lite - Flash Lite

To get it to work on a mobile phone (Flash Lite enabled of course) you need the following:

  1. Nokia Series 60 mobile phone that supports Flash Lite 1.1 - Supported handset list
  2. The Flash Lite 1.1 Player - Download here
  3. GPRS connection

If you want more information about Flash Lite, go to the Macromedia web site.

How it works

  • First off, you select which area of the UK you want to view the reports for.
  • You then need to select which GPRS account you want to use.
  • The 12 most recent incidents are loaded (6 on each page), and the title is displayed.
  • Then click on a title to view the report detail.

Every incident is given a severity rating in the RSS feed which matches this key.

Flash Lite Application Key

You can also use the application on the desktop as a swf file or an exe. The Nokia 6680 template below is a working version of the application. Click the Flash movie (in the centre), and press “Enter” to start.

Instructions

When using the app on the desktop, you need to use the cursor keys to select the regional areas and the mouse to click the traffic reports. Series 60 devices also have two “soft keys” as shown which can be replicated using Page Up and Page Down (make sure the flash movie has focus). The rest is pretty straight forward.

Flash Lite Soft Keys

Everything works the same in the desktop version apart from the clock in the top left corner which doesn’t appear.
